Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
The Angsana Marine Lab carryies out the following activities as part of its environment and marine management program "Life of the Maldives":
- Turtle rehabilitation,
- Guided snorkeling from the marine lab team explaining the marine life and the work carried out by the Angsana Marine Lab,
- Coral planting on recycled materials (coral regenerations)
- Beach erosion monitoring with GPS
- Lectures on marine life awareness,
- Reef and lagoon cleaning,
- Educational tours for nearby inhabited island (locals) on environment issues,
- Monitoring CO2 energy and water consumption to address impacts to global warming (controlling of carbon di-oxide emission),
- Greening Program (tree planting),
- Battery recycling, and
- Special care is taken of turtle nests during relocation. Relocation reduces the risk of predatory mortality. The baby turtles are kept for a couple of weeks in tanks before releasing to the Indian Ocean to reduce mortality.
